Transept
In the central space of the church, there are works depicting the saints of the first
ruling dynasty, the House of Árpád. In one of the sculpture niches under the
dome, a white marble statue by Alajos Stróbl depicts the venetian St. Gellért and
his tutor, St. Imre. Bishop Gellért was martyred during the pagan revolts.
Among the Árpád saints is the lyrical statue by Károly Senyei of St. Elizabeth of
Árpád, a prominent, charitable saint from the Middle Ages. St. László, the
chivalrous ruler of the House of Árpád, definitively established Christianity in
Hungary. The statue of him is the last work of János Fadrusz, an outstanding
personality in the field of memorial sculpture. The originally planned frescoes
were replaced by glass mosaics on the ceiling and dome. The larger ones were
made by the Venetian firm Salviati, the smaller ones by the Pest-based
manufacturer Miksa Róth. The mosaics in the main dome were designed by
Károly Lotz and depict the heavens with the figure of God the Father in the
centre. The mosaic of the prophets and St. John the Baptist surrounding Christ is
a reference to the relationship between the Old and New Testaments. The fields
above the pillars supporting the dome are decorated with the four evangelists
Matthew, Mark, Luke and John - each with their own attribute. Also, by Károly
Lotz are the mosaics on the barrel vault: the birth of Jesus Christ, Jesus the
Teacher, the resurrection of Jairus' daughter and the Easter Resurrection of Jesus
Christ.
