Altar of St. Imre
On the next altar there is a painting by György Vastagh of St. Stephen's son,
Prince St. Imre taking his virginity vows. King Stephen summarised the duties
of a good ruler for him in his 'Admonitions', and entrusted Bishop Gellért, who
was later canonised, with the task of teaching him. Imre prayed a lot, often
going to quiet churches to pray undisturbed. It was at one such night of prayer
that he received the divine prompt to take a vow of perpetual chastity. In 1031,
in preparation for the coronation, a great hunt was held. Tragically, a wild boar
attacked and mortally wounded him. He died a few days later on the 2
September 1031, leaving King Stephen without a successor.
The bone relic of his mother, Queen Gizella the Blessed, is on the altar in a
laced gold reliquary. Emperor St. Henry II, Prince Imre's uncle, is depicted in
the window above.
